Distinguished Research Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Santa Cruz. Contributions to understanding how coevolution shapes ecological web of life over time and space. Identified major patterns and processes in ways that species coevolve with their parasites, predators, and mutualists under different environmental conditions. Through his books, Interaction and Coevolution (1982), The Coevolutionary Process (1994), The Geographic Mosaic of Coevolution (2005), and Relentless Evolution (2013) shaped direction of future coevolutionary research. Applies results of research to the conservation of biodiversity across rapidly changing environments.
