Professor J.G.A. Pocock was the Harry C. Black Emeritus Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. Before coming to the United States, Professor Pocock spent the majority of his early life in New Zealand, receiving his B.A. and M.A. in history at the University of New Zealand. He was renowned the world over for his historical writings on political and intellectual thought. In particular, Professor Pocock was known for his studies on republicanism in the Western World and the work of Enlightenment historians like Edward Gibbon. His books include Virtue, Commerce, and History; The Machiavellian Moment; Politics, Language, and Time; The Ancient Constitution and the Feudal Law; Barbarism and Religion; and Political Discourse in Early Modern Britain. His awards include the Lippincott Award, Jacques Barzun Prize, Officer of the Order of New Zealand Merit, and Award for Scholarly Distinction. Additionally, he was a member of the British Academy, Royal Historical Society, and American Philosophical Society.
