Research centers on modern literary and cultural theory and criticism. He has been an interpreter and critic of structuralism and deconstruction in widely translated books. He has written on linguistic theory in his book on Saussure and in articles on semiotics in Framing the Sign. His own literary criticism includes a book on Flaubert but in recent decades has focused on the lyric, publishing Theory of the Lyric in 2015. He is currently writing on Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal.
