Evolutionary biology, especially methods for reconstructing phylogenies (evolutionary trees). Also theoretical population genetics. I am the author of Inferring Phylogenies (2004) and of the PHYLIP package of programs for phylogenetic inference. My recent work has been on quantitative characters evolving on phylogenies, and on trees of gene copies within species. I have also spent some effort in recent years analyzing creationist arguments and "intelligent design" arguments that make use of theoretical population genetics.
