Known for his work on problems in physical organic chemistry, Bunnett's chief interest in his later years was the destruction of chemical weapons. He was chair of the Committee on Chemical Weapons Destruction of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and served on a committee of similar focus at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (an intergovernmental agency set up under terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention treaty).
