Professor of Economics. Developed identification strategies in empirical economics and expanded the scope of natural experiments. Provided econometric tools that interpret instrumental variable estimates when there are heterogeneous treatment effects. Empirical contributions include estimates of the impact of military service on civilian earnings, the economic returns to education, the effect of family size on labor supply, and the effect of class size on achievement. Recent research focuses on the evaluation of school reform and links between research design and market design.
