Known for theoretical studies in cosmology, including natural inflation, the first model of quintessence dark energy, and the evolution of cosmological perturbations. He has also played leading roles in cosmic surveys, such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES). He served as Chair of the SDSS Collaboration Council and Co-chair of its Large-Scale Structure Working Group and guided measurements of the large-scale structure and of weak gravitational lensing. Frieman led the SDSS-II Supernova Survey, which discovered more than 500 type Ia supernovae and constrained the nature of dark energy. Frieman co-founded and led the Dark Energy Survey, a successor to the SDSS, which has mapped ovrer 300 million galaxies and discovered thousands of supernovae to probe the origin of cosmic acceleration. He currently serves as Head of the Fermilab Particle Physics Division.
