McMahon-Hank Professor of Philosophy. Work in classical German philosophy' (Kant and Hegel). Authored Kant's Theory of Mind (1982), a reconsideration of the importance of metaphysics for Kant (as against the Anglo-American style of interpretation), and Kant and the Fate of Autonomy (2000). These have made a major impact on the study of the period.
