Revealed new paradigms in genetics, cell biology and biochemistry of RNA viruses. Discovered the mechanism of recombination between viral RNAs, the existence of large two-dimensional lattices of viral enzymes that provide a model for surface catalysis in biology, and that the cellular process of autophagy facilities viral spread without destroying cells. Honors include NIH Director's Pioneer Award (2006), to investigate how to suppress drug resistance in viruses.
