Professor of Geophysics, President. Studies Earth's gravity field from satellite data, tidal deformations and rotational motion of the Earth, and lithospheric and crustal deformation processes. Recent focus is on sea level change and history of the Earth's ice sheets during past glacial cycles, including field and laboratory work and numerical modeling. Work impacts current aspects of climate and sea level change. President of Australian Academy of Science. Writings include The Earth's Variable Rotation: Geophysical Causes and Consequences (1980) and Geophysical Geodesy: The Slow Deformations of the Earth (1988).
