Research focuses on neurophysiology and is particularly devoted the the study of mammalian visual system. He has carried out research on visual perceptual phenomena, underlying physiological mechanisms in the animal in the attempt to correlate visual perception with the activity of visual neurons. He has also studied the role of electrical activity in the development of the visual system of mammals, and he has been able to record for the first time the electrical activity of the rat ganglion cells in utero during embryonal life. More recently, he has investigated the role of neurotrophins in the development of the visual system of mammals. This investigation has turned out to be of particular interest.
