Fletcher Professor of Drama and Oratory, Director of Graduate Studies in Drama. Instrumental in developing several new directions in theatre studies, including the history of popular entertainments; sex and gender in performance; historical reconstruction of significant productions; and theatre iconography. Trained in both comparative literature and the professional stage, created a symbiosis between scholarship and stagecraft. Extensive work as translator, editor, and critic of Chekhov. In addition to scholarship, is active participant in the Boston area as director, producer, and translator of theatrical and operatic productions. Recipient of the St. George Medal from the Russian Ministry of Culture, as well as awards and grants from numerous foundations and academic societies. Has served as officer in many scholarly organizations and adviser to publishers, journals and funding arms.
