Maude and Lillian Presley Professor of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School. Research centered on the impact of social factors (including cultural beliefs) on health status of adults and children. Later worked to improve genetic teaching in medical education in order to increase competence in genetic care and to highlight the interactions between genes and environment. He was active in campaigns for human rights and to promote intellectual and humanitarian exchanges with Cuba and Iraq.
