Mr. Leslie H. Gelb has been the President Emeritus at The Council on Foreign Relations, Inc. since 2003. Gelb served as a Deputy Editor of the Editorial Page at New York Times from 1985 to 1990 and its Editor of Op-Ed Page from 1988 to 1990 and National security correspondent. He spent many years with The New York Times, where he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1985. Additionally, he served as an Assistant Secretary of State in the Jimmy Carter administration and Director of Policy Planning and Arms Control for International Security Affairs of the Defense Department from 1967 to 1969, which led him to win the Distinguished Service Award, the Pentagon's highest honor. He has been a Senior Board Fellow of Council on Foreign Relations, Inc. since 2003. His books include The Irony of Vietnam and its Own Worst Enemy: The Unmaking of American Foreign PolicyHis latest book is Power Rules, which examines how to think about and use international power in the twenty-first century. He serves on many business and NGO boards, lectures, and does business consulting.
