Has a large and continuing influence on the field of law and economics. His early paper on bargaining in the shadow of the law is one of the most cited law review articles of all time and has generated a vast literature on the role of informal dispute resolution in the structuring of legal institutions. He contributed in important ways to many areas of study, including fields as diverse as elections, joint and several liability, cost-benefit analysis, matrimonial law, corporate takeovers, and multi-member courts. Holder of both a JD and a PhD in economics, he is a leader in the area of law and economics and former President of the American Association of Law and Economics.
