Lilli Alanen has played a significant role in shaping recent thought on Descartes' position on mind-body union and its implications for contemporary Philosophy of Mind and Action, in our understandings of Spinoza's conception of affect and agency, Hume's account of the passions and of Early Modern theories of modality. As Professor of the History of Philosophy at Uppsala University (and the first woman appointed as Professor of Philosophy in Sweden), she has directed International research projects and mentored a generation of junior philosophers.  She has supported feminist research in the history of philosophy and helped establish academic careers of women in philosophy.
