Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, Dr. Aiken was V.P. of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Aiken is currently a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences where she is a member of the Board on Health Care Services. She is a fellow of the National Academy of Social Insurance, a former president of the American Academy of Nursing, Distinguished Fellow of the Association for Health Services Search, and a member of the Council on the Economic Impact of the Health System Change. She served on the Medicare Physician Payment Review Commission for six years, and was a member of President Clinton's National Health Reform Task Force. Dr. Aiken conducts research on health care outcomes and health workforce policy. Her recent work has focused on accounting for variation in hospital patient outcomes in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany, research for which she received the Sigma Theta Tau International Clinical Research Award in 1999.
