Waite is an influential social demographer whose research examines working families, marriage, sexuality, aging and the life course, and health. She directs the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, a longitudinal study of health and well-being among older adults. Since joining the University of Chicago in 1991, Waite has served as Co-Director of the Sloan Center on Parents, Children, and Work and Director of the NIA-Funded Center on Aging. She has served as President of the Population Association of America, and was the 2012 recipient of the Matilda White Riley Award from the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research, National Institutes of Health.  She is the recipient of a MERIT Award from the National Institute on Aging.
