In more than 20 books and numerous articles, Li integrates recently excavated manuscripts, inscriptions, and archaeological finds into a comprehensive understanding of classical Chinese civilization. Based on these new materials, he proposes reinterpretations of transmitted classical texts. His work on the transmission of technical knowledge within professional lineages has a focal point in the understanding of the history of science in early China. His archaeological work, complemented by studies of historical geography, emphasizes connections between China and other parts of Eurasia. Li's work is known in both the United States and abroad, most notably, in China, where he currently works as a professor.
