Tauxe's research centers on variations of the earth's magnetic field, both in  intensity, and direction, over time. Her results based on the study of natural and man-made (archaeological) materials suggest that the strength of the magnetic field over the last 10,000 years or so is much higher than the mean long-term value for Earth, which is about half the value of the present field.   Tauxe authored or coauthored nearly 200 papers and several monographs, resulting in an h-index of 58, and established a paleomagnetics research facility at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
