An authority on 17th-century music, opera, and the philology of librettos, his scholarship and publications on early opera and Italian madrigals have been remarkable. He is also an internationally recognized expert on Handel and Rossini. Since 2012 he has served as co-editor for Dizionario biografico degli Italiani (the Italian 'National Biography') and of the critical edition of Cavalli’s operas. While a student, he developed a strong interest in the Italian Baroque, in the later phases of the Italian madrigal, and in the dramatic technique of opera: these subjects have been the focus of much of his later work. In 2004 he helped establish the Museo della Musica in Bologna.
