Distinguished Professor of Geophysics. Made substantial contributions to understanding of the role of the mantle convection in the evolution of Earth. Publications focus on the role of mantle mixing in distributing and homogenizing subducted slabs. Pioneered the integration of mantle convection calculations with geochemical and isotopic studies of basalts. Coauthored Compositional Stratification in the Deep Mantle in Science (1999), a fundamental study of mantle dynamics. Established the W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES) at University of California, Davis, and demonstrated the wide utility of three-dimensional visualization in understanding mantle, crustal, and surface processes. Served as chair of her department at UC, Davis, and as member and chair of the US National Committee on Seismology and Geodynamics of the National Research Council's Board of Earth Sciences and Resources. Honors include Fellow, American Geophysical Union, Francis Birch Lecture, American Geophysical Union (2001), Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (2012) and Presidential Faculty Fellow Award of the National Science Foundation (1992).
