Henry L. Hillman Professor and Chair, Department of Moelcular Biology; Professor, Princeton Neuroscience Institute. Contributions to understanding biology of DNA viruses with emphasis on neurotropic herpes viruses and the detail by which they are neuropathogenic. Developed porcine pseudorabies as model for understanding how alpha herpes viruses target infection and spread in the nervous system. Discovered that pseudorabies virus follows reproducible pathways, moving from neuron to neuron, when it infects the brain by various routes. Advanced understanding of neuropathogenesis and enabled neurological circuit mapping. Past Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Virology; Former President, American Society for Virology. Co-author of Principles of Virology (1999), a widely used virology textbook. He currently is the president of the American Society for Microbiology and the founding editor of the Annual Reviews of Virology.
