Lampert's research lies in the field and study of endemic dilemmas of teaching and how interactions among teacher, students, and content shape instructional practice. Her book, Teaching Problems and the Problems of Teaching (2001) made fundamental theoretical contributions to understanding ambitious mathematics instruction. Lampert has been also at the forefront of practice-based approaches to teacher preparation. She and her colleagues have developed the concept of an instructional activity to structure the demands of teaching and learning useful for all subject matter. The concept has been successfully used in programs that prepare teachers in urban, high poverty classrooms in Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, and New York.
