Early proponent of the study of close relationships, now a major domain of psychological research, at the intersection of personality, emotion, and social psychology. Early leader in emotion research, especially how emotions influence and are influenced by relationship contexts. Noted for distinguishing communal versus exchange relationships; involving mutual care and a  focus on the well-being of one's partner as well as on that of the self, the latter the more usual equity based model. Authored the Close Relationships chapter in the Handbook of Social Psychology. She is the embodiment of a communally oriented person. She served as president of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology as well as chair and later president of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology.
