Pioneer in understanding how different aspects of visual information are organized into anatomically distinct modules. She discovered a novel, anatomically distinct system for processing color in primary visual cortex; that the second visual area is also subdivided into modules that process form, color, and depth; that higher visual areas are also divided into regions that process faces, scenes, and other intensively experienced object categories. She also found the existence and selective interconnectivity of specialized domains, and showed this is a general principle of cortical organization.
