Distinguished scholar of medieval philosophy and the philosophy of religion, she is also an ordained Episcopal priest, and served as a canon of Christ Church Cathedral at Oxford concurrently with her term as Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford (2004-09). Prior to that, she was the Horace Tracy Pitkin Professor of Historical Theology at Yale. She is best known for her studies of William of Ockham and her works on the problem of evil, what she has termed horrendous evils. She co-founded and served as President of the Society for Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy and the Society of Christian Philosophers.
