Martin Hairer

Martin Hairer is a Professor of Pure Mathematics at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne and Imperial College London. His main areas of interest are probability theory and analysis, with a particular focus on the analysis of stochastic partial differential equations.

Hairer had done breakthrough work at the intersection of analysis and probability. In 2014 he won the International Mathematical Union's Fields Medal for visionary work which introduced a radical new way of constructing solutions for certain nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations which had been intractable before, and which are of great importance in particular to physics.

Hairer received a B.S. in Mathematics and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Geneva.
