His research has been in immunology, cell biology, and developmental neurobiology, with special interests in T and B cell biology, apoptosis, controls on cell size and numbers, cell differentiation, and intracellular developmental programs, including intracellular developmental timers. He was president of the British Society of Cell Biology from 1991 to 1995 and Chairman of the UK Life Sciences Committee from 1997 to 2001.He retired from active science in 2001 and is now Emeritus Professor in the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at University College London. I now spend much of my time on scientific advisory boards in the UK and USA and thinking about autism.
