Professor Dr.

Meinrat O. Andreae

University of California, San Diego
Biogeochemist; Research institution scientist and administrator
Area
Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Specialty
Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Earth Sciences
Elected
2013
Director of Biogeochemistry Department, Max Planck Institute of Chemistry; Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society. Andreae conducted extensive studies on the interaction of the biosphere and the atmosphere, with emphasis on atmospheric aerosols and trace gases. These studies are on both local and regional scales. He has carried out extensive field investigations in the Amazon Basin, Africa and in the oceans with the particular goal of identifying the chemical nature of aerosols and gases that are critical to understanding the sources and sinks of pollutants in the atmosphere and their subsequent transformation by photochemical reactions. In particular he has contributed to understanding of biomass burning. He is deeply involved in the development and application of advanced analytical techniques to define the active chemical species. Andreae is an active leader in the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia, honorary chair of the scientific steering committee of Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study, and head of the scientific advisory board of the High Altitude and Long-Range Research Aircraft programs.
