Chiu has served as Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden since 2014. Earlier, at the Asia Society, she was director of the Asia Society Museum (2004-14), and curator for contemporary Asian and Asian American art (2001-2004). She was also Vice President of Global Art Programs at the Asia Society, responsible for programming at its Park Avenue museum (New York) and future museum facilities under construction in Hong Kong and Houston. Chiu was also the founding director of the Asia-Australia Arts Centre in Sydney, Australia (1996-2001) and curator of the University of Western Sydney Collection (1993-96). She is well known as an expert in and champion of contemporary and modern art in Asia, and she is the first non-American to serve as head of the Hirshhorn.
