Michael E. Geyer
Professor Michael Geyer is Samuel N. Harper Professor Emeritus in History and former Faculty Director of the Human Rights Program, now the Pozen Center for Human Rights, at the University of Chicago. He is distinguished for intense engagement with contemporary history, erudition and creativity at illuminating the history of violence and war in Western nations. Geyer's research mostly focuses on Modern German and European history, history and theory of human rights, international and transnational history, globalization, and war and genocide. His work with German history is mostly on the German military, resistance against the Third Reich, the politics of memory, the culture of death and sacrifice, intellectuals in contemporary Germany, religion and belief, and more. His work links together the most basic concerns of contemporary society, from war-making and human rights to globalization. His accomplishments include Faculty Awards for Teaching at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago, Best Historical Book for "A Shattered Past: Reconstructing German Histories", Axel Springer Berlin Prize, Humboldt Prize, and a Guggenheim fellowship.
