Dr. Gimbrone is a physician-scientist whose research centers on understanding the causes, and improving the diagnosis and treatment, of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. The focus of his studies is the vascular endothelium -- the single-cell thick lining of the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), in health and disease. His laboratory has discovered molecular mechanisms mediating endothelial dysfunction, which are important in inflammation, atherosclerosis and cancer. He also is committed to the teaching and mentoring of medical students and young biomedical scientists.
