Michael Maltzan

The work of architect Michael Maltzan ranges from cultural institutions and civic infrastructure to housing and education, consistently engaging architecture as a vehicle for social change in challenging and complex urban contexts. His projects include the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, MoMA QNS, Star Apartments, the new Sixth Street Viaduct in Los Angeles, the MIT Vassar Street Residential Hall, the UCLA Hammer Museum expansion, the Winnipeg Art Gallery Inuit Art Centre, and the RIT Performing Arts Center.

His firm, Michael Maltzan Architecture, has a deep commitment to the public realm. Its work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Heinz Architectural Center, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, and is held in the permanent collections at museums across the country. The firm was selected in 2006, 2018, and 2020 for the Venice Biennale.

Maltzan’s work has gained international acclaim for innovation in both design and construction, including five Progressive Architecture awards; more than 50 citations from local, state and national chapters of the American Institute of Architects; and the 2025 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture.

Maltzan holds an M.Arch from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and BFA and B.Arch degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design.
