Chief, Laboratory of Cell Biology, Deputy Director for Intramural Research. Defined mechanisms of multidrug resistance in cancer cells. With collaborators, identified first member of a family of mammalian ATP-dependent transporters that pump anti-cancer drugs out of cells; described their biochemistry, DNA sequence, and genomic structure; and showed how they contribute to multidrug resistance in cancer cells and affect normal cell physiology and pharmacology, including effects of polymorphisms on drug pharmacokinetics. For fifteen years, has led NIH Intramural Research Program.
