Michael W. Doyle
Michael W. Doyle is the director of Columbia Global Initiative and University Professor at Columbia University. His research interests include international relations theory, international law, and international history; civil wars and international peace-building; and the United Nations. He has published on the history of empires and theories of war and peace and is best known for his work on "liberal peace theory."
From 2006 to 2013, Professor Doyle served as an individual member and chairperson of the UN Democracy Fund, which was established in 2005 by the UN General Assembly to promote grass-roots democratization around the world. He previously served as assistant secretary-general and special adviser for policy planning to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Professor Doyle formerly taught at Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Yale Law School, and the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. He served as vice president and senior fellow of the International Peace Institute and currently is a member of its board.
Professor Doyle received an A.B. and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has received two career awards from the American Political Science Association, one for his scholarship and the other for public service. He has been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences. He holds a honorary doctorate in law from the University of Warwick (UK).
