Lipson is a pioneer of silicon photonics, helping to realize the practical integration of electronic and photonic technologies. Her research has augmented the field of silicon photonics from fundamental exploration of the silicon-light interaction to the fabrication and analysis of networks of silicon photonic devices. She has designed and constructed key building-block devices such as ring resonators, low-loss waveguides and modulators and integrated those devices into optically-based and optically-controlled logic circuits. More than 1000 papers published yearly involve devices based on research from Lipson's group. MacArthur Fellow (2010).
