Klein's research centered on excitations in solids studied by light scattering and related optical techniques. The materials of greatest interest to him were strongly-correlated metals and insulators that exhibit superconductivity and/or various sorts of magnetism. Present theoretical understanding is often found to be inadequate to deal with such strongly-interacting systems. By measuring the spectra of light scattered off the sample, he studied the interactions among the electronics, magnetic and vibrational excitations of these crystalline materials.
