Mitchell Kronenberg

Dr. Mitchell Kronenberg served on the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine from 1986 to 1997. He joined the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in 1997 and was the President of the Institute from 2003 to 2021 and Chief Scientific Officer from 2021 to 2023. He is currently a Professor and President Emeritus and a member of the Institute's Board of Directors.

Dr. Kronenberg is passionate about the value of independent research institutes to the biomedical research ecosystem, and he advises several prominent research institutes and centers. The Kronenberg research group is deeply interested in the regulation of the mucosal immune system and the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A current direction investigates the genetic influences on T cells in human IBD and analyzes stem-like T cells, important for sustaining pathogenesis. with a focus on collaborative work using patient material and mechanistic research on mouse models. His lab has also uncovered some of the unique properties of innate-like T lymphocytes, which reside in mucosal and other tissues, including the intestine, and provide especially rapid protective responses.
