Distinguished Professor, Wayne State University School of Medicine. Research focuses on primate systematics and human evolution as elucidated by molecular genetic data gathered on such genomic loci as those containing genes encoding proteins involved in aerobic energy metabolism. He is producing a phylogenetically accurate primate taxonomy; in drastically reducing the separation of humans from apes, it places chimpanzees next to humans in the genus Homo . He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Molecular Phylogenics and Evolution , and director of an Academy project on humankind's evolutionary origins. Present research interests include identifying positively selected genetic changes that shaped being human.
