President. Appointed President of Northwestern University after nearly a decade of service as President of Williams College (2000-2009). Among the nation's premier authorities on the economics of higher education, with particular expertise in the area of college financing and affordability and on trends in educational costs and student aid. A frequent commentator on economic and educational issues, who has published nine books and more than one hundred articles. Administrative service includes Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California (1994-2000), where he also served as Vice President for Planning during his last two years as Dean.
