Co-originator of the Black-Scholes options pricing model, a major contribution to financial economic theory that has had a profound impact on finance practice, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1997. Over the past three decades he has made major contributions to empirical methodology and testing in finance, the effects of taxation on pricing of assets and corporate strategy, and the design of financial institutions. He served as President of the American Finance Association in 1990.
