Research focuses on the biological bases of social and emotional behavior, developing methods for assessing brain activity in infants and young children during tasks designed to elicit a range of emotions. Has led major longitudinal investigations of the development of temperament and its biological bases, its modifications in family and culture, and its contributions to the development of psychopathology. Pioneer in integrating the use of EEG, fMRI and other neural assessments into sophisticated understanding of social development. Principal investigator on the Bucharest Early Intervention Project. Served as editor of Infant Behavior and Development and associate editor of Developmental Psychology and Psychophysiology. Currently, associate editor of the International Journal of Behavioral Development. Recipient, the Distinguished Scientific Investigator Award from the National Association for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD). Fellow, Association for Psychological Science, and AAAS. Member of the executive committee, NIH Toolbox Project, and the National Scientific Council for the Developing Child.
