Co-director, Productivity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program; Professor of Economics. Research interests are measuring and explaining management and organizational practices across companies and countries, and trying to use this to explain differences in company- and country-level growth. Work has been very influential both in academia and in the public sphere more generally. He also works on innovation and IT, looking at factors that affect these such as competition, tax, learning, and government regulations. A third area of research is the causes and consequences of uncertainty, arising both from unique events like the 9/11 terrorist attack and the Cuban missile crisis, and also from slower-moving uncertainty fluctuations over the business cycle. Held positions as a policy adviser at HM Treasury and as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Fellow of the Econometric Society. Recipient, the Frisch Medal from the Econometric Society for his 2009 article, The Impact of Uncertainty Shocks.
