Nina Wedell

Nina Wedell is an evolutionary biologist and an ARC Laureate Fellow originating from Sweden (Ph.D. 1993) who arrived in Melbourne, Australia in 2022 after spending decades working in the U.K. Her research is focused on illuminating the role of genomic parasites in generating intragenomic conflict and she has pioneered knowledge of the role of sexual conflict and selfish genes in the evolutionary process. Her research applies interdisciplinary approaches spanning the behavioral, evolutionary, and molecular sciences using a range of techniques in a variety of insects including butterflies, moths and flies. Her current work is focused on the evolutionary dynamics of insecticide resistance alleles in flies.

For her research achievements, she became the President-Elect of the European Society of Evolutionary Biology, named in 2015, and elected President of the International Society of Behavioural Ecology in 2012. She also received the Royal Society Wolfson Award for outstanding contribution to research in 2011, and was elected a life-long member of the European Molecular Biology Organization in 2014 and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2026.
