Scholar and educator with specialty in experimental film. Visionary Film: The American Avant-Garde 1943-1978 (1979) is the canonical book on the subject. Writing and teaching has helped not only shape, but also to create the discourse on avant-garde film in the United States, and is internationally acclaimed. Essays for Art Forum have influenced filmmakers, visual artists, and art critics. Founder, Anthology Film Archives, an essential institution in terms of the art world both nationally and internationally. Work covers a wide range of subjects-from modernism to comparative literature to Italian realist film. Edited The Gaze of Orpheus and Other Literary Essays by Maurice Blanchot (1981). His book, Eyes Upside Down: Visionary Film Makers and the Heritage of Emerson (2008), places avant-garde experimental film in a context that can be traced back to the Transcendentalists.
