Silver's studies on nuclear trafficking of macromolecules and use of GFP tags for studying dynamic processes in living cells have been major contributions to Cell Biology. She is one of the founding scientists in Synthetic Biology, where she contributed to the development of novel organisms, synthetic biological circuits, and biological sensors and is the co-inventor of the Bionic Leaf.   She is a recipient of the National Institutes of Health MERIT award, and founded the Harvard undergraduate team for the International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition (iGEM).
