                    As a member of the IBM System R project in the 1970s, helped establish the field of relational database systems. Technical contributions of the System R project include the SQL query language, cost-based query optimization, and log-based recovery techniques. These techniques remain the cornerstone of modern relational database systems. Received the SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award (2002).
