
Paul Arthur Buttenwieser
Paul Buttenwieser, A.B. Harvard College (1960), M.D. Harvard Medical School (1964), Graduate, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute (1975) is a psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. He has taught for many years at Harvard Medical School, the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Children's Hospital. As a child he studied the piano, violin, clarinet, conducting and composition; as a lifelong amateur pianist, music is still central in his life. He is the author of two novels, Free Association (Little, Brown 1981) and Their Pride and Joy (Delacorte Press 1987), of short stories, and book reviews. In 1988, with his wife Catherine, he founded the Family-to-Family Project in response to the crisis of family homelessness, where he remains as Founder. He serves as President of the Board of Trustees of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Trustee of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (Chair of the Board of Trustees, 2004-2014; Trustee of the American Repertory Theater (Chair of the Advisory Board 1992-1999); Trustee of Partners in Health; Honorary Trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Trustee 1997-2009), member, President's Advisory Council, Berklee College of Music, Boston Public Schools Arts Advisory Board, Dean's Leadership Council, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Director's Advisory Council, Harvard Art Museums. From 2001-2007 he was a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College, and served on Visiting Committees to the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard College, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Departments of Engligh, Music, Psychology, and Visual and Environmental Studies. At Harvard's Commencement in 2010 he received the Harvard Medal from President Drew Gilpin Faust.
