Co-founder of Microsoft and currently Chairman of Vulcan, Inc. Owns many stakes in media, technology, real estate and other holdings. Has made substantial philanthropic contributions totaling more than $1.1 billion in areas such as health, human services, the advancement of science (Allen Telescope Array), and art, music and science fiction (EMP Museum). Greatest contribution to advancement of science has been creation of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, an independent, nonprofit research institute whose mission is leading-edge understanding of the brain, and delivers data and tools online free to scientists worldwide. New projects currently underway are a human brain atlas, the spinal cord atlas, and a mouse developmental atlas.
